SFA On The Practice Field To Kick Off The 2017 Season

The SFA football team held their first football practice of the season as they aim to finish over .500 for the first time since 2014.

NACOGDOCHES - Football returned to Stephen F. Austin on Thursday afternoon as the Lumberjacks took part in their first practice of fall camp. Players and coaches were anxious to get back on the gridiron to prepare for the 2017 season. This is the first of 18 practices that the Lumberjacks will go through over the next 3 weeks.

One of the biggest questions coming into fall camp is who will be the starting quarterback in week 1. With starting QB Foster Sawyer sidelined for an indefinite period of time, someone else will have to step up. According to head coach Clint Conque, it’s a 3-way battle. “It’s an ongoing competition,” Conque explained, “We’re working three quarterbacks, three scholarship quarterbacks. I think it’s going to be a healthy situation there as far as talent and depth.”

Coach Conque was pleased with the enthusiasm of the team, and felt that played a significant role in the overall success of the practice. “Energy and enthusiasm are very contagious. And the way they were moving from drill to drill, the mechanics, I thought were pretty solid,” stated Conque.

The Lumberjacks are coming off of two straight losing seasons and are hoping to turn things around this year. SFA will open the season at SMU on September 2nd. Their home opener will be a week later when they host Southern Utah on September 9th.
