Be on the lookout for fake NCAA tournament tickets

As the old saying goes, "if it's too good to be true then it probably is."

For only the fourth time ever, the Spectrum Center plays host to the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds. Like all major sporting events, be on the lookout for fake tickets.

The number-one way to ensure you have a legitimate ticket is to buy from a reputable vendor, if not the Spectrum Center's box office or your school's athletic department. After that, consider these websites:

  • StubHub
  • SeatGeek
  • TicketMaster

As the old saying goes, "if it's too good to be true then it probably is." One Charlotte man found out the hard way while buying tickets for the ACC Championship.

"I bought seven [tickets] for $15 a piece, none of them worked," he told NBC Charlotte.

CMPD has warned us before about impostors selling fake tickets to Carolina Panthers games.

So how do you know if your seats are scam or glam[orous]? They can look exactly the same. The Better Business Bureau says scammers are more sophisticated than ever and the devil is in the details.

Here are steps you can take to avoid being scammed:

  1. Make sure the row and seat are in the same venue. You can do that by going to the Spectrum Center's seating chart.
  2. Check the ticket to ensure the date is accurate.
  3. Familiarize with the refund policy.

After you've found someone to buy tickets and had a chance to confirm they are real, the BBB suggests paying by credit card to ensure that you can report the tickets as fraud and get your money back.

Sure, the students athletes you're going to support in the game aren't in school this week but you still need to do your homework to ensure your experience at this weekend's NCAA tournament is a slam dunk!
