Guitars Etc helps local East Texas Food Bank with free guitar strings

ATHENS (KYTX) - Musicians who are interested in helping the many people in the local community affected by the recession can now benefit from their helping hand.

Guitars Etc. is teaming up with the Independent Music Store Owners Group, D'addario and SIT strings for their fifth annual Food for Strings food drive.

The event is taking place on Saturday, November 16th from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Musicians need to bring at least four non-perishable food items or cash donation (suggested $3), and the experienced staff will give them a brand new set of D'addarioor SIT strings.

For a $10 donation Guitars Etc will install the strings, oil the fretboard and polish the guitar.

All food collected and cash donations collected will be donated to the East Texas Food Bank. Donations will be accepted even if the customer is not interested in a restring.

To ensure each customer receives a quality restring, the store, which normally staffs two guitar techs, will double its staff for the day.

A few regular customers volunteer to strip strings off the guitars, polish and clean, while the guitar techs will restring and tune.

The repair shop, which normally houses two guitar benches, will have four for the day.

Any instrument requiring more than just re-stringing can be assessed and left for repair at a discounted rate for the donations.

Guitars Etc. is doing this as part of their community outreach. They are also running a sale
during the weekends events offering great discounts store wide.

Musicians who donate food in exchange for the restring will be a part of a
nationwide effort to support food banks local to their store.

The Independent Music Store Owners Group has organized more than 36 stores to participate in the 2013 drive.

In the past two years, iMSO member stores changed more than 2,500 sets of strings and collected more than 13,011 pounds of food.
