LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - It's the last day of school before winter break for students at South Ward Elementary, and as school was letting out early for the break...
"A kindergartner was showing off a handgun he had brought to school in a backpack."
L.i.s.d spokesman Adam Holland says someone told a teacher and the gun was immediately taken up.
"The timing for this couldn't be more unsettling for parents."
Parents like Dawn Redwine who lives on the same street of South Ward Elementary.
"I feel like they need to crack down on the security with the school because I have children that will be going there soon and my niece goes there, I think they need to do something quick."
Holland says the school district has many safety precautions in place.
- During school hours all doors are locked.
- Visitors have to be buzzed in the front door.
- There are live cameras on campus.
- Visitors must have background checks.
But parents want to see more done.
"They need to get the little metal detectors if they need to, because we need more help out here. It's to many kids dying over little silly guns."
"First of all a metal detector is great, do tax payers want to pay for that do tax payers understand that a metal detector will not detect a composite gun."
Redwine says after last week's tragedy in Connecticut, hearing that a gun was brought into a neighboring school still worries her. She just wants to know her East Texas students are as safe as they can be.
"I love my children and I know everyone else does, we need to do something, now!"
UPDATE (KYTX) - It is unclear whether a gun confiscated from a student at South Ward Elementary School today was loaded or if the student also had bullets in his backpack.
At about 5 p.m. Tuesday, Longview police spokeswoman Debra Stiles said she did not know if the gun was loaded, and that she was told that anyone wanting to know the answer to that question would have to file an open records request. CBS 19 has filed that request with Longview police.
Longview Independent School District spokesman Adam Holland also said he did not know if the gun was loaded.
UPDATE: (KYTX) - School officials at South Ward Elementary School confiscated a handgun from a kindergarten student this afternoon as the campus was dismissing for Winter Break.
The child had no malicious intent to our knowledge, rather it is believed by police and school personnel that he brought the weapon to school to show off to friends. The gun was not discharged and there were no injuries.
South Ward was never in a ‘lock down,' as a result of the discovery, since the gun was immediately confiscated, and students had already been dismissed.
Longview police and Longview ISD officials are investigating the incident and will take appropriate action pending the outcome of the investigation.
All South Ward parents have been notified of the incident.
