14-year-old Magnolia girl found safe in South Texas, family says

MAGNOLIA, Texas (KHOU) - The Magnolia girl who disappeared with a former family friend earlier this week has been found safe in South Texas, family members say.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert on Tuesday for Elizabeth Rex, 14.

The girl's family said Elizabeth, known as "Lizzy," was taken by Randy Johnson, 51.

According to family, the suspect in the case worked with Lizzy's dad, Patrick. The Rex family took Johnson in after learning he was battling cancer and had nowhere to go, but they later kicked him out after they say he got a little too friendly with Lizzy.

On Monday, the girl walked outside and simply vanished.

Her parents knew nothing until they received a call from Johnson taunting them.

"He calls us and says, ‘Y'all will never see Lizzy again and things like that cuz where we're going you can't get there,'" said Patrick Rex. "Not even ten minutes later he calls back and goes, ‘La-la-la-la.'"

Lizzy and Johnson were later found in the South Texas city of Harlingen.

Johnson was taken into custody, and Lizzy was sent back home to be reunited with her parents.

Lizzy's parents said she has a touch of Down Syndrome, autism, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD).
