$3 million renovations to Longview's Lobo Stadium

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - It's an upgrade the Longview Independent School District says is long overdue.

"You got a 10,000 seat stadium you want to try to make sure everything is in code."
John King is Longview High School's head football coach and athletic director over the district.
He says the need for more safety and handicap accessibility is what prompted the changes coming to lobo stadiuM.
"We have to add an additional 44 toilets and that ought to tell you how far behind we are."
And that's only on the home side. Monday L.I.S.D's  board of trustees approved the $3 million worth of renovations that will be taken from the district general fund.
"It's kind of like the rainy day fund I guess for the state, but it's our fund balance and we have money and we're able to put towards major renovations like this."
King says Lobo fans can expect renovated men and women's restrooms on both the home and visitor sides. New side walks and pavings for better wheelchair accessibility, fencing and more walking space added near the home side concession stand. New softball dugouts and maybe even chair back seats on the visitor side.
"That was apart of the original proposal and they didn't approve that, they kind of tabled it and we'll see what happens with it."
But what was approved - king says was definitely needed.
"Stadium is being changed for the people, not only for football and soccer and track and softball, but for the community as a whole."
A community that has benefited from the mean green Lobo Stadium since it opened in 1976.
"This is the Marquee stadium in East Texas and we want to keep it that way."
