(KYTX) - If you have loved ones at risk for lung disease, scientists at UT Health Northeast could help protect them.

The Flight Attendants Medical Research Institute gave two scientists more than 325,000 dollars each for their research into lung disease.

The American Heart Association awarded 308,000 dollars to a third scientist for her work studying blood clotting.

"My research area is basically understanding the processes that leads to unwanted blood clotting because they are a major cause for diseases like heart attack, stroke and various cardiovascular diseases," says Dr. Hema Kothari from UT Health Northeast.

These three and four year grants allow young researchers to continue their studies that could eventually lead to better health care.
