TYLER (KYTX) - A 4-year-old East Texas girl is reunited with her parents after wandering from her home.
Tyler police found the little girl unclothed and wandering around in Faulkner Park around 9 a.m. Thursday.
A happy reunion for the mother and father of this four-year-old girl. A person visiting Faulkner Park Thursday morning found the girl wandering around by herself.
"We believe she was on her way to the water park," said Tyler Officer Don Martin.
The splash pad, less than a mile away from her house, is where Tyler police investigators believe she was heading to cool off.
"The father stated their air conditioner had been out for several days and they haven't been able to get it fixed," said Officer Martin.
Officers found the girl's father frantically searching for her soon after she was found.
He told investigators they had left the windows open at their home, to get air, in the Irish Meadows subdivision, which is right behind the park.
He said he fell asleep and when he woke up, he noticed she was gone. Her mother was at work.
"I think these parents were operating for the safety of their child, but they just forgot to focus on their natural child behaviors," explained Shelley Judd, Parent Services Center.
Shelley Judd with the Parents Services Center in Tyler said this is something that can happen to anyone.
She says parent supervision is key. In a situation, such as this, she says you need to enforce guidelines for small children.
"You can make sure your child is involved in the living room where you can watch them," added Judd.
This story had a happy ending, but serves as a reminder of how quickly a small child can get away.
"She's unharmed and we're thankful nothing else happened," said Officer Martin.
Police called Child Protective Services, which is standard procedure in this situation.
