LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Five Longview High School senior football players have been named to the 2012-13 Texas High School Coaches Association All-State Academic team.
Colin Jeter, a two-year starter and 2012 All-District selection, was named to the first team – one of only student-athletes in the Longview area to make the squad.
Jalen Johnson, a 2012 varsity football letterman, was a second team selection.
Corey Bartley, Torean Sheppard and Javontrae Williams were awarded honorable mention spots on the statewide team.
"I can't say enough about what these young men bring to the table – whether it's on the field, in the classroom or in the community," Head Coach/Athletic Director John King said. "We are extremely proud of them and it's comforting to know that these guys are our future leaders."
Williams, who lettered this past season, was a linebacker on the 2012 Area Championship team. Sheppard was a two-year starter on the defense and grabbed 2012 All-District honors. Bartley was named All-District and All-State in 2011 and 2012 for his athletic performance. He also made the 2011 All-East Texas squad.
Athletes who are nominated for the THSCA All-State Academic team must have maintained a grade average above 92 throughout grades 9 through 11, and through the first six weeks of their senior year, according to the association. Honorees must also be of good moral character.
Longview High School's five Academic All-State members will be among the honorees at the annual Lobo Football Banquet, 6:30 p.m. January 17 at Elevation (Mobberly Baptist Church), 625 E. Loop 281.
Tickets for the event are $10 and are on sale January 7-16 at the Longview ISD Athletic Office on Hawkins Pkwy.
