50-Gallon Challenge blood drive kicks off Monday at TJC
Staff Reports

Tyler Junior College will partner with Carter BloodCare for the second annual 50-Gallon Challenge blood drive.

"The five-day blood drive challenges students and community members to collectively give 50 gallons of life-saving blood donations. In 2012, blood donors surpassed the goal and collected 51 gallons; which translates to 1,200 lives saved," according to the written release.
The blood drive will take place Monday through Friday at Tyler Junior College, 1327 S. Baxter Ave. The hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Donors can give inside the second floor of the Rogers Student Center, on the new Carter BloodCare platelet bus at Rogers Student Parking Lot for those donating platelets and Pirtle Tech Parking Lot will be the location of the Carter BloodCare bus for those donating whole blood donations.

All donors will receive a special event T-shirt and be entered to win prizes from local vendors. For more information or to schedule an appointment time, contact Lauren Tyler at 903-510-2611. Visit TheGreatBigGiveBack. org for more information.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent's consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they donate. It's also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. For more information about donor eligibility and to make an appointment, call Carter BloodCare at 1-800-366-2834 or visit carterbloodcare.org.
