(CBS/CNN) - An 8.0 magnitude earthquake hits off the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami warning for several countries in the area, including Papua, New Guinea and Fiji. But the Center later canceled the alert.
We do know that people living near the coastal areas and patients at one hospital had to be evacuated. A small tsunami in the Solomon Islands reportedly killed at least five people and damaged dozens of homes.
