Ariel Castro to speak at sentencing

(CNN) - Sentencing is scheduled today for a man who held three women captive in his home for more than a decade.

It happened in Cleveland, Ohio. The victims were Amanda Berry, Gina Dejesus, and Michelle Knight.

According to his attorney, Ariel Castro will speak at his sentencing hearing today. He pleaded guilty last week to 937 counts including murder and kidnapping. Castro's plea deal dropped the death penalty in exchange for life in prison, plus 1,000 years.

Prosecutors established a record in case he tries to appeal in the future. Part of that record includes a psychiatrist's evaluation of his three victims.

The document also details Knight's courage.

"She was the one that was doing the doctoring and if Gina was getting in trouble, she was stepping in to protect her, she became almost their protector," said WOIO Reporter, Lydia Esparra.

Someone close to the investigation says that Michelle Knight will speak at the sentencing hearing. At this time, it's unclear whether the other two women, Gina Dejesus and Amanda Berry, will speak in court.

They could make a videotaped statement, or a family member could talk on their behalf.
