PANOLA COUNTY (Panola Watchman) (KTBS) - Former Carthaginian Bernie Tiede was transported to the Panola County Detention Center late Tuesday evening, Jan. 21, after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
Chief Deputy John Depresca told the Panola Watchman that the warrant was issued by District Judge Charles "Brick" Dickerson who handed down the order Friday, Jan. 17.
"The warrant told us to have him in Panola County by January 22," Depresca said.
Tiede was transferred from the Telford Unit in New Boston.
"We don't know how long he'll be here," Depresca said.
According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice website, Tiede is serving a life sentence and isn't eligible for parole until Aug. 20, 2027, 18 days after his 69th birthday.
Tiede was given his sentence on Feb. 11, 1999 after he was found guilty of murdering the late Marjorie Nugent and hiding her body in a freezer for nine months.
This is a developing story.
