NEW YORK (USA TODAY)- Crumbs Bake Shop announced Monday it was closing all stores, telling customers there would be no more sweet treats.
But a glorious cupcake remained in Likeable Media's New York refrigerator the next day, employee Brian Murray, 31, said.
Workers debated what to do with it. Eat it? Never. Sell it? Yes.
"We were laughing that we probably had one of the last Crumbs cupcakes," Murray, director of talent for Likeable Media, said. "For $250, we could do something for the office." Maybe a lunch.
The sprinkled cupcake, which cost $3.95, was put up for auction on eBay. The bidding started at $250. Folks can "Buy It Now" for $1,000. Bidding will end July 11.
Murray says the 40-person agency will miss Crumbs. He says it's become somewhat of a ritual to visit the shop on 42nd Street.
"For the past three or four years, it has been a tradition to get cupcakes for someone's birthday," Murray said. "Crumbs has become part of who we are."
But they are willing to part with the Crumbs remnant, for a price.
