Bills inspired by fired Longview police officer move to committee

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - A fired Longview police officer has inspired legislation in the state house aimed to protect injured peace officers.

Leigh Ann Snyder spent a week in Austin last month, telling lawmakers about her December termination from the City of Longview for not returning to full active duty within 12 months of being injured on the job.

House bills 1697 and 1430 -- along with senate bill 1205 -- would make it illegal to fire a peace officer, firefighter, detention officer or county jailer because of an injury until they have fully recovered.

"Everyone was very, very supportive, and actually couldn't believe that this could actually happen to an officer," Snyder said.

All three bills have been introduced on the floor of the Texas Legislature and moved to committee.

No dates have been set to discuss any of the bills.
