Booster clubs supporting student success

Booster Clubs

TYLER (KYTX) - Whether it's in school or on the field, booster clubs are supporting student organizations in a big way.

"It's like being at college and having mom and dad slip a couple extra $100 in your pocket. It helps."

A lot of it is through the support of booster clubs.

Glen Smith is president of the one at Robert E. Lee High School.

"It just helps the coaches out, it helps the teams out." he says. "What they might need that the school or the state doesn't support."

He says the vast majority of booster club money is made up of your concession purchases at Rose Stadium throughout the year.

"So, the next time you think your hot dog is a little expensive or your cold drink is a little expensive, it probably is, but it's going to a great cause." says Smith.

Kilgore High School football coach Mike Wood says he couldn't run his program without the support of booster club volunteers.

"Our booster club does such a great job. It allows the community to get involved with our programs. And, they do a great job of tailgating before games and a lot of our people start showing up early and getting involved. And, it's just a way for our community to get behind our players."

Smith says as a parent, that's what it's all about.

"It doesn't have to be booster club, but just get involved with your students, with your school."

He says parent and community involvement is key in your student's success.
