Boy Scouts See Opposition

Boy Scouts See Opposition

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - The resolution approved by the Southern Baptist Convention Wednesday, does *not* ask church members to sever ties with the Boy Scouts of America. But it does state that the convention will  support churches and families who work to overturn the decision to allow gay scouts. Southern Baptist parents like Jimmy Elliot, say they still don't mind their children in the scouts.
"I have family members that are gay, it doesn't bother me at all"

On May 23rd,  the Boy Scouts of America overturned it's century old policy of turning away homosexual scouts. The nation's largest protestant denomination, disagrees with that decision.
"We have many churches that support the boy scouts, and many church leaders that also lead the boy scouts"

Gary May is the Pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Longview.  He explains that the Convention's decisions are simply guidelines based on scripture.
"Southern Baptist members here in Longview say that policies aren't formed from opinions, but rather from this book, the Holy Bible" - Kevin Boyce
"Their aim and their goal is to help young boys develop character and be Godly strong young men. And they feel like if there are homosexual scouts in the troupe it makes it more difficult to do that."

He says many in his congregation are Boy Scouts and Boy Scout Leaders.
"The best thing they can do is to remain with the Boy Scouts. And with due time, hopefully see that decision reversed"
Parents like Jimmy say  taking the Boy Scouts away from any child would be wrong.
"The values and skills they learn are good for everybody"
Skills he says his child will soon learn.
