Authorities identified the suspect as Dabrett Black, of Lindale.

Black is no stranger to East Texas authorities, having been arrested in July 2017 after a car chase that ended with him crashing into a Smith County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

He was released on a $10,550 bond on July 31, charged with one count of evading arrest, one count of aggravated assault against a public servant and one count of reckless driving.

He was indicted on Oct. 5 for evading arrest and aggravated assault against a public servant, and his bond increased to $200,000 per count.

He's described as a black male, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 175 pounds. The suspect fled the scene in a gray Chevy Malibu with plates JDN-4273.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton released the following statement:

I am saddened to hear of the tragic death of a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper killed today in Freestone County. This trooper died selflessly serving Texas. Please join Angela and me as we pray for the trooper's family and for the entire Department of Public Safety.

Authorities ask residents to call 911 and not approach the suspect if spotted.
