Businesses around East Texas battle the flu

TYLER (KYTX) - As the flu continues to wreak havoc on East Texans, local businesses are trying to keep the illness as far away from possible.

Some business owners in the area say they have to be extra careful when it comes to eliminating germs. Places like gyms can turn into big germ pools..

Danny Liles spends a pretty big chunk of his week at KH Fitness in Tyler.

"I work out actually maybe four days a week," he says.

As he lifts weights on a gym machine, he can't help but think of all the germs that could be on those handles.

"Because everybody's hands touch all the stuff!"

He knows too many people who have had the flu and says he's not taking any chances.

"When I'm done lifting that's the first thing I do is always try to wash my hands," Liles said.

Gym owner Kelly Hitchcock says a gym can be a easy way to spread germs.

"We try to every hour, walk around and clean the benches off, not only the benches or the handles, of course because that's where your hands are at," he said.

It's not just the dumbbells or ellipticals that are getting extra washing during flu season.

"We also clean the bathrooms a little bit more consistently," Hitchcock said, "just to make sure and prevent anybody from getting sick or germs in the restroom."

When you're out and about, you can take your health into your own hands. If you're worried about the germs on a gym machine before your workout, just ask the front desk. They'll grab some cleaner and a towel and wipe it all down before you start your workout.

"There's a thousand hands that touch the dumbbells every day so you can never really be too safe as far as protecting yourself and it's really easy just to wash your hands when you're done," Lile said.

At most businesses, you'll find hand sanitizer at the front desk or lobby area. A joint effort to kick the flu out of East Texas.

Even the healthiest of people can get the flu, so it's always better to take precautions.
