Caldwell Zoo lion cubs are named

TYLER (KYTX) - The latest additions to the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler now have names after a contest was held to help name three female lion cubs.

Following a contest through facebook, email, and in person, the winning names of three lion cubs are:

Zuri which means beautiful, Amira which means princess, and Malika which means angel.

On January 22nd, Njeri, the zoo's female African lion, gave birth to five lion cubs. One youngster died shortly after birth, but the remaining four are doing very well under the watchful eye of their mom.

Zoo staff is being careful not to disturb this new family, but the three females and one male, (named "Doc" in honor of the staff veterinarian who passed away this winter), were given a once-over and weighed on February 19th.

The little ones have certainly grown! They weigh eight to ten pounds now and can be seen exploring as they venture out of their den box.

With the warmer weather and the fact the lion cubs are ready for some adventure, the furry foursome is given the option each day to be outside at 10:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m.

Zoo visitors are welcome to stop by the lion exhibit to see the cubs playing outside or see them in the lion house on the zoo's television monitor.
