MOUNT PLEASANT (KYTX) - "Camp Braveheart is a Summer Camp in Mount Pleasant that allows some amazing young hearts, to open up."
These children are simply enjoying a normal day at camp but they bear a burden most children don't. Chelsea Anderson is just 11 years old, and has been forced to grow up quickly. Chelsea lost her mother when she was 2, and lost her dad, Justin, in a car wreck last year.
"Most girls get to walk down the aisle with the father on their wedding day, or invite their mother over for their baby shower"
Camp Braveheart is a camp devoted to helping these children open up and express themselves through art. Chelsea made this cross in honor of her father, she says it reminds her that God is always there for her. Camp Director Jillian Hodgkiss says the camp brought in 30 children this year and offers a place for them to share their stories, and teaches them how to grieve.
"The crafts yeah, they are fun but its a gateway to get them talking. And it's very therapeutic, and helps them to open up"
The camp is paid for by Cypress Basin Hospice in Mount Pleasant and is free of charge to any kids wanting to join. And Chelsea said it's given her the rare opportunity to make friends she can relate to.
"Other kids don't understand, and when I come here, they know how tough it is"
"Chelsea now lives with her Grandmother in Mount Pleasant, who says her granddaughter is the strongest 11 year old she knows, and it is certainly hard to argue that point." - Kevin Boyce
