Car burglaries rise during the holidays; avoid becoming a victim

Tyler, TX (KYTX)-- While it's the most wonderful time of the year, according to law enforcement, it's also a time when criminals strike.

"Put gifts in the trunks if at all possible. Most people have trunks, if not, throw a blanket or something over them," Don Martin, spokesperson for Tyler Police, said.

It sounds simple, but instances of theft aren't going away. "Especially around Christmas, all the parking lots are filled, so it's easier for them to break in," Reaghan Beasley, who works at Apricot Lane boutique in Tyler, said.

Her store gives customers a little extra help. "We give customers the option to leave their merchandise here while they're shopping in the center or we encourage them to put it in the trunk of their car," Beasley said.

Officers also recommend parking in well-lit areas, and locking your car at all times.
