Cherokee County woman found dead in driveway, husband charged with murder

CHEROKEE CO. (KYTX) - On Sunday April 20, 2014 at approximately 9:35am Kayla Nicole Thompson (27 years of age) was found deceased in the driveway of her residence, located in the 1500 block of County Road 3201 just West of Lake Jacksonville.

She was discovered by her mother, who was going to the house to check on Kayla and her four children after other relatives were unable to reach Kayla for several hours.

Those relatives had been trying to reach Kayla to let her know they had taken her husband, Cedric Dewayne Thompson (34 years of age), to a hospital near Kilgore for medical treatment after he had called them earlier in the morning, and told them he wanted to hurt himself.  Cedric had been transferred to a hospital in Longview, and they needed to let her know where he was.

Neighbors in the immediate area, and who were outside when Kayla was found, heard screams of help and came to the driveway to see what was wrong.  After seeing her in the driveway, several calls were placed to 9-1-1.

EMS units arrived on scene within 8 minutes, and a Cherokee County Deputy arrived on the scene approximately 10 minutes later.

Upon that Deputy's arrival, and verification from EMS that she was deceased, Investigators with Cherokee County Sheriff's Office were notified of the situation as was  Justice Of The Peace, Precinct 4, Vera Foreman who pronounced Thompson at the scene.  She was later taken to Dallas for autopsy.

The children had been found still in the residence and appeared to be physically un-harmed.  They were released in the custody of their grand-parents, and later interviewed by staff at the Crisis Center in Jacksonville.

Deputies and Investigators remained at the Thompson residence until after 6:00pm Sunday night, while other Investigators obtained search warrants for the vehicle Cedric Thompson was driving, and an arrest warrant for Cedric Thompson for the First Degree Felony charge of Murder.

At approximately 2:00pm, a Deputy from Cherokee County, with assistance from Longview Police Department, arrested Cedric Thompson immediately upon the issuance of the Murder warrant by Justice Of The Peace, Precinct 3 of Jacksonville, Judge Phillip Grimes.

Cedric Thompson was taken before a local magistrate in Kilgore (Gregg County), and transported back to Cherokee County Jail before 6:00pm Sunday night.

Later in the evening a search warrant was obtained for the vehicle, which was located at a residence just south of Marshall, Texas on FM-31 in Harrison County.  A Cherokee County Investigator traveled to Marshall and was assisted by an Investigator with Harrison County Sheriff's Office in locating and seizing the vehicle.  The vehicle was brought back to Cherokee County around 1:00am on April 21, 2014.

Cedric remains in custody at Cherokee County Jail, and was arraigned by Justice Of The Peace, Precinct 1, Judge Brenda Dominy.  His bond was set at 1 million dollars.

No details of the injuries sustained by the victim, or a possible motive are being released at this time.  Final autopsy results will not be available to the Sheriff's Office for several weeks.
