Chili cook off benefits fire departments

RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - Grab your spoon and some water because this chili isn't just hot, it's helping firefighters put out fires.

Four churches organized a chili cookoff to help raise money to help the Troup and Carlisle volunteer fire departments.

The cookoff was held at Carlisle High School.

The secret to a winning recipe? Helping others.

"Summer before last was a horrible drought and we had so many wildfires and our volunteer fire departments were really strained to the limit. Their budgets, for gasoline, especially. Just everything, their trucks and everything, they just needed some help," says Susan Martin, a church member who helped put together the event.

Last year the chili cookoff raised more than $5,000 for the Troup and Carlisle fire departments.
