City of Tatum still without police chief

TATUM/RUSK COUNTY (KYTX) - The City of Tatum is operating with three full-time police officers, two part-time officers and three reserve officers, but no chief.

City Secretary Shelly Williams said the City Council has received several applications for police chief but will continue to accept applications for the foreseeable future. Council members meet again in February, but no agenda has been released.

Mayor Phil Cory is administering the department because the city does not want to name another interim chief. On Dec. 12, the city fired Tony Almengor as police chief for what Cory said was reported unprofessional conduct and behavior. Almengor had served as interim chief since Jan. 17, 2012, when former chief Ron Martin and another officer resigned amid a woman's allegations that she was forced by the chief to leave her home in her vehicle while she was intoxicated.
