Community gathers to plant 100 trees, kick off new green initiative

TYLER (KYTX) - The City of Tyler is known for its trees and plants and if you can remember what warm weather is like, even green grass.

For years volunteers have been planting new trees in central Tyler. CBS 19's Katiera Winfrey explains a new initiative called green up the gateway is spreading nature down old Jacksonville highway.

Trees and empty holes serve as the backdrop, as dozens --despite the light rain-- trek down Old Jacksonville Highway with shovels in hand.

"It's fun to be a par of a whole community coming to gether."

This community job is a dirty one.

Girl Scouts, daisy's, and plain old volunteers came together to plant 100 trees.

The tree planting is a part of Mayor Barbara Bass Tree Tyler initiative to plant 5,000 trees in five years.

However in less than five years, more than 5,000 trees have been planted. So now a new initiative has sprouted, "Green Up the Gateway.

The mission is to take the focus from planting in the parks and focus more on planting along the roads that bring people into Tyler.

"When people hit Tyler we want people to know we're here and we are a beautiful city," said Bass.

Tyler is what's called a natural forest, there are already quite a few trees.

However, City of Tyler Arborist Luke Porter says, a love for trees is something that needs to continue through the generations, and it's something that needs to be learned.

"When you go and plant something an put your hard earned work and sweat into it you have a little more pride," he said.

That's where the kiddos factor in.

"You'll notice these kids driving back they'll be yelling at their mom look at the tree I planted."

So whether you're planting 100 trees or being more realistic, the key is to just get out there, and make Tyler beautiful.
