Construction on new Tyler shopping center on schedule for fall 2014 opening

It's only a matter of months before the first few stores in a massive new shopping center in Tyler will open its doors.

Construction of the 80-acre center, The Village at Cumberland Park, is moving along right on schedule. It's the largest project in the state right now.

The economic impact on Tyler so far -- just with the jobs that have been created for the construction of the center alone -- is huge; not to mention the 2,000 retail and restaurant jobs it will bring to the community. And the tax impact to the city, county and the school districts is estimated to be up to $5 million per year.

Bob Garrett is the president of Broadway South Development Company, the project developer of Cumberland Park.

"In order to have a project like this in Tyler, Texas, on the heels of the worst economic crisis we've seen in this country in decades is pretty amazing," he said.

The $100 million dollar shopping center -- located on south Broadway and Loop 49 -- will include not only retailers, like TJ Maxx and DSW, but also restaurants and a movie theater.

"The whole thing's set up to be convenient and conducive to people coming in and spending time, and not just shopping but going to a movie," David C. Wilson, president of Connected Development Services for the Dallas-based developer The Retail Connection, L.P., said.

Garrett says the hope is that The Village will keep more shoppers and more money right here in Tyler.

"We've identified a lot of leakage of retail sales that have left our area to go to larger markets that we believe we can recapture back into this market," he said.

"It's just a bigger mix of promotional and quality retailers that function in more of a convenient setting from the standpoint of being able to drive up and be pretty close to the front door and go straight in and get your stuff," Wilson said.

Some of the stores will open on September 26, but completion of the nearly 700,000 square foot shopping center is still more than a year away -- slated for a fall 2014 opening.

There is also a road project in the works that will make it easier for people on the west side of Tyler to get to the new shopping center. Cumberland Road is being extended from Old Jacksonville Road to Broadway Avenue.

That project should be complete by summer of 2016.
