Consultant: Pedestrian safety improvements needed in Longview

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - More than $2 million - that's what a consultant says it will cost the City of Longview to add sidewalks, traffic lights and other pedestrian safety improvements to three major streets.

No plans are final, but people who walk Longview streets say they worry for their safety.

Gary London says he's often left to trample any beaten path. "We need to have more sidewalks," he says. "In some places, there are no sidewalks, like going down here, and on that side."

Brooke Droptini is a consultant with Freese and Nichols, a Tyler firm hired to find spots where the City of Longview needs improved pedestrian safety.

At today's Longview MPO meeting, she told policy board members the city needs more and better sidewalks as well as pedestrian-centered traffic lighting.

Consultants will make a more formal presentation to the city council next week.
