HOUSTON – Houston police say a 14-year-old boy died at the hospital after a shooting in the Greenspoint area overnight.
Police were responding to Goodson Drive around 2 a.m. when they came across the victim’s family, who were rushing him to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach. Family members identify the teen as OCyrus Breaux. They say he was outside his family’s apartment, celebrating his 14th birthday with neighborhood friends.
“I have no idea why him out of all people,” said Tiffany Taylor. Taylor is a neighbor and family friend. She was at Breaux’s home to celebrate his birthday. “This is a child that loves sports. Loves to play. Keeps you laughing all day. He was so proud of his last report card. He was so proud. All A’s!”
Braux was a month away from starting 8th grade at Stovall Middle School.
“All you hear is just like one single shot. Pop,” said Taylor. She says he ran from the parking lot of his apartment unit and made it to his family’s front door where he collapsed.
“Once we rolled him over you could just see a single gunshot wound,” said Taylor.
Police say a motive for the shooting is unknown as the investigation is still underway. “Right now we’re hearing that the shots came out of no where,” said HPD Detective David Stark.
Investigators are trying to figure out if an armed robbery that happened around the same time as the shooting and a couple of blocks from Breaux’s apartment is connected to the deadly shooting.
“At this point we just don’t know if they were related or not,” said Stark.
The suspects in the robbery were taken into custody for questioning to see if there’s any connection to the shooting.
“Hopefully we’ll get some closure to this,” said Taylor. “This kid would lighten up anyone’s day. I’m just really blown away by this.”
