Jury selection begins Monday for Anderson Co. man accused of campsite murders

The trial for William Mitchell Hudson, accused of killing six people at an Anderson County campsite in 2015, will move forward starting Sept 25 in Brazos County.

The Palestine Herald-Press reported that Judge Mark Calhoon ruled the trial will move forward during the last pre-trial hearing held on Sept. 21.

Hudson was indicted on three counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of of Carl Johnson, 76; his daughter, Hannah Johnson, 40; his grandson, Kade, 6; Thomas Kamp, 45, and his two sons, Nathan, 23, and Austin, 21, at a campsite in Tennessee Colony.

Hannah Johnson was killed with blunt force and the others all shot to death. Hudson allegedly helped the Kamp/Johnson group with a vehicle stuck in the mud and was invited to hang out with the group at the campsite.

The bodies of Kamp and his two sons, Nathan and Austin, and Johnson's son Kade. were found in a pond on Hudson's property. Hannah Johnson's body and that of her father, Carl Johnson, were found inside a travel trailer.

"I was there. I saw the horrific and senseless nature of this criminal act,” Allyson Mitchell, Anderson County District Attorney, said. “There are no words to adequately describe this atrocious act. Six members of two different yet joined families are gone."

The lone survivor, Cynthia Johnson, was able to escape and call for help.

“Nothing can describe the pain and suffering the remaining family members feel,” said Steven Woodruff, the uncle of Tom Kamp.

Jury selection begins at 8:25 a.m. in Bryan, Texas. The Anderson County District Attorney plans to seek the death penalty.
