Smith Co. deputy constable stops Tyler robbery in progress

TYLER - A suspect whose intent was to rob a Tyler convenience store late Tuesday night was thwarted by a Smith County Constable.

A Precinct 1 Deputy Constable was driving by the Super Food Mart in the 2000 block of Gentry Parkway around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday night and noticed a man covering his face and walking into the store. The constable turned around to investigate.

The constable walked into the store and saw the suspect, 21-year-old Martiness Jones-Bigham, holding a knife and trying to rob the store. The constable immediately gained control of the situation and after Tyler Police arrived on scene, Jones-Bigham was arrested without incident.

Jones-Bigham was booked into the Smith County Jail on one count of robbery, and his bond has not yet been set.

No one was injured during this robbery.

This incident is still under investigation, and it is not clear whether this robbery is related to similar incidents that have happened in the area in recent weeks.
