SMITH COUNTY - A suspect is recovering at a Tyler hospital after being tased several times during a traffic stop that turned into an arrest Friday afternoon.
The incident happened Oct. 27 around 1:30 p.m. after a Smith County deputy initiated a traffic stop due to an expired registration.
The suspect, identified as DeAndre Foster, got out of the car and tried to walk away. He then became agitated, reaching his hands inside his pockets and pulling out items, including suspected illegal drugs.
At that point deputies attempted to arrest Foster, but he tried to flee and fought with them for several minutes. Foster was tased three times, and two drive stuns were performed as well, before deputies were able to handcuff him. (A drive stun is where the taser is held against a target without firing the projectiles).
Foster began convulsing shortly after he was subdued and handcuffed, so authorities called EMS. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment, and continues to recover.
