TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH (KYTX) - David Simpson of Longview is running for speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.
The second-term republican announces today that he will challenge joe straus of San Antonio for the powerful political post.
Danny Mogle from our news partenrs at the Tyler paper joins us with today's developments.
Danny, why has Simpson decided to run?
David Simpson says that it is time to transform the way the house does is political business. He says that too often the House leadership resorts to intimidation and retribution to get things done.
He also says – without naming names -- that there are several house members who are backing his effort.
Representative Bryan Hughes of Mineola earlier announced, he too, would run for speaker of the house.
Is he still running?
Bryan Hughes announced that has dropped out of the race. He is now throwing his support behind Simpson, another conservative East Texas.
House members will elect their leader when the legislature reconvenes in January
