(CNN) - Workers are combing through the charred wreckage of a nightclub in southern Brazil that caught fire over the weekend.
More than 230 people were killed in the "Kiss" nightclub fire in Santa Maria early Sunday morning. Investigators encountered the eerie sounds of ringing cell phones.
Many died from smoke inhalation, others were trampled in the rush to get out. Firefighters say about 2,000 people were in the club about the time, which is double it's maximum capacity.
Witnesses say a flare or fireworks lit by band members may have started the fire. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Investigators are considering manslaughter charges against the band.
More than 100 people are still being treated in the hospital.
