Deadly Month for Texas Lakes

Deadly Month for Texas Lakes

MARION COUNTY (KYTX) - The Memorial Day weekend brings out thousands of boaters, swimmers, and fishermen to East Texas lakes. However, it has been a dangerous trip for many.  The roar of speed boats, jet skis, and kids splashing around. Everyone is taking a much needed break from work, and school.   Chaz Warren is a tour guide, and gives boat tours around East Texas waters. He says lakes are his home.

"I drive a boat to work, and I drive a boat home."
He says when the sun is blazing the water is a relief.
"It's cool and it's hot in the summer time. You can always jump in and cool yourself off."
But he says some people, can ruin a fun day for everyone.   According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, at least 14 deaths have occurred on Texas lakes since May 9th. Two have already happened this Memorial Day weekend. Two boats ran into each other on the Angelina river near Beaumont.
Texas Parks and Wildlife reports these accidents can be prevented. 88% of people who drown aren't wearing life jackets, if you have a speed boat you should slow down, and just like with cars never mix drinking and driving.
