(CNN) - So to recap: The U.S. lost today 1-0, in a game where Germany dominated possession (63%) and shots (13-4), and the Americans, working without injured forward Jozy Altidore, made precious few dangerous attacks.
But by virtue of a win and a tie in the two previous matches -- and by not leaking too many goals to Germany -- the United States finishes second in its group and advances to the knockout stage. Unbeaten Germany, easily the class of the group with two wins and a draw, moves on perhaps more confidently.
Let's do it again at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, when the United States will play its next match -- possibly with a healed Altidore, and likely against Belgium but possibly against Algeria (that's to be determined tonight)
Germany, U.S. into the knockout stage
Germany beats the U.S. 1-0, but Portugal beat Ghana only 2-1 in this afternoon's other game. So:
-- Germany wins Group G with 7 points (two wins and a tie).
-- The United States finishes second with 4 points (a win and a tie) and a goal difference of 0.
-- Portugal finishes third with 4 points (a win and a tie) and a goal difference of -3.
-- Ghana finishes fourth with 1 point (a tie).
Germany and the United States advance to the knockout stage.
The United States will face the winner of Group H on Tuesday. That opponent will be determined in tonight's Group H matches.
Belgium, with 6 points heading into tonight, is the favorite to win the group, though Algeria, with 3 points, would face the United States if it beats Russia tonight and Belgium loses to South Korea.
Germany will face Group H's runner-up on Monday.
