Do you have an exit strategy?

LONGVIEW/GREGG COUNTY (KYTX) - It's one of those things you don't really think about when you walk into a restaurant, a bar or a club that's crowded full of people, how are you going to get out?  The Longview Fire Department says it only takes a second to scan a room and find an exit strategy.

Joseph White plays pool and hangs out daily at Fast Freddy's in Longview. He says the last thing on his mind when he's out and about is looking for exit signs.
"I don't really think about it because it doesn't seem that important at the time."
But after hearing about last weeks nightclub shooting in Henderson where one man died and nearly 200 people panicked, scrambling for an exit, a light bulb went off in white's head.
"I guess I should know where I'm going to get out."
"In today's society you never know what might happen someone could come in and open fire at the entrance."
Longview Fire Marshall Johnny Zachary said, it's a business's responsibility to provide the proper number of exits depending on the building size and to make sure exits are visible and well lit. And in case of a shooting, fire or other disaster, it's your job to find those exits.
In January, more than 230 people were killed in a Brazil nightclub fire, as they all tried to get out the same door they came in.
"We ended up with a huge loss."
The Longview Fire Department says look for alternative exits:
  1.   Make a mental note of where exits are - should you need one.
  2.   Look at the crowd - if people are jammed in like sardines, move toward an exit.
  3.   Look at hallways and walk ways - if they're blocked or look hazardous get the attention of a manager.
The Longview Fire Department says if you go into a facility and their exits are locked or blocked.the best thing to do is to contact your local fire department so they can come out and address the situation.
