TYLER (KYTX) - You can save money and combat air pollution by driving clean across Texas this summer.
The Texas Department of Transportation and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality launched the campaign just ahead of the July 4th.
"Keeping your vehicle maintained on a regular schedule will help it run to its peak efficiency, which also means it's going to burn cleaner."
TXDoT Public Information Officer Larry Krantz says this can also avoid a big hassle.
"I don't think I've ever gone on a vacation where I haven't seen a car broken down on the side of the road and said, 'man, glad that's not me.'"
Gwen Spadie with Peltier Chevrolet says that problem can usually be avoided.
First, make sure your tires are properly inflated.
"This is going to give you a lot better gas mileage." she says.
Spadie says you should also make sure your fluids are topped off and that you're up-to-date on oil changes.
"We all hate the guy who has black smoke pouring out of the back of his truck."
Something you can do to help yourself out while driving in the heat this summer and keep your AC running a little smoother, is think about tinting your windows.
"Because it doesn't have to work so much against Mother Nature." says Spadie. "Your car is basically a greenhouse."
With plenty of components that can get stressed out in the heat without proper care.
"These are all things that could possibly fail on you if you haven't looked in on them in a while. And, that's going to make the vacation memorable for the wrong reasons." says Krantz.
