Driver charged in fatal Longview wreck; Benefit planned for victims' families

UPDATE: Longview High School International Baccalaureate students are planning a vehicle beatdown before Friday night's football game to raise money both for needy children and the families of four seniors involved in Wednesday's fatal one-vehicle rollover near the school.

The IB senior Car Beatdown is Friday, November 9th, 5 to 7 p.m. in the senior parking lot. Half of the funds will be donated to Feed the Children, and the rest will be donated to the families in the car wreck, according to LHS student Torean Sheppard.

"Please come out and support your Longview High School Seniors. The cost is a dollar for two hits with your choice of either a baseball bat, a crowbar, or a sledgehammer," Sheppard said.

There will also be face painting for the children to show their Lobo spirit and pride. The varsity cheerleaders will be out there too from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

"Please come out and support the Longview Lobos and 2013 Seniors on there last home football game of the year against Rockwall," Sheppard said.

LONGVIEW (KYTX) - Longview Police spokeswoman Kristie Brian said the 17-year-old driver in a fatal one-vehicle rollover wreck on Wednesday was cited for failure to maintain speed, and that the case will be forwarded to the Gregg County District Attorney's Office, where more charges could be filed.

Killed in the wreck was 18-year-old Cristian Ali Monreal. The driver and two other passengers - who were all hospitalized - have not been identified by police. They were soccer players at Longview High School and were returning from their afternoon off-campus jobs to the school for ninth-period athletics class, LHS Soccer Coach James Wright said.

Two of the injured teens have been released from the hospital, while one victim remains hospitalized, Brian said.
