East Texans react to first presidential debate

TYLER (KYTX) - Republican Mary Bruner says it's time for a change in American leadership.

"I just think we've had a really hard four years." she says. "I think the economy is really, really bad. Some of my neighbors don't have jobs."

But, Democrat Mike McCrady says Obama is working hard to get America back on track.

"Given what he's had to work with, I think he's done a great job." says McCrady.

"When I walked into the Oval Office," said President Obama at the debate, "I had more than a trillion dollar deficit greeting me. And, we know where that came from. Two wars that were paid for on a credit card, two tax cuts that were not paid for and a whole bunch of programs that were not paid for."

"My priority is putting people back to work." said presidential candidate Mitt Romney. "They're suffering in this country. We've got 23 million people out of work, or who have stopped looking for work in this country."

"You still have to stimulate the economy and get it going. There's nobody that questions that." says McCrady.

East Texans at the Republican watch party agree. Job growth and the economy are the most important issues to them.

Bruner believes Romney has new ideas that could work.

"My plan is to bring down rates, but also to bring down deductions and exemptions, and credits at the same time, so the revenue stays in, but we bring down rates to get more people working." said Romney.

And, McCrady believes in President Obama's plan to reduce the deficit.

"Let's make sure that we are cutting out those things that are not helping us grow. So, 77 government programs- everything from aircrafts that the air force had ordered but weren't working very well.... 18 government programs for education that were well-intentioned, but weren't helping kids learn." said Obama.

The next time the candidates square off is October 16 at Hofstra University in New York.
