East Texas celebrates July 4

TYLER (KYTX)-Today's parades were complete with flag waving, singing and communities coming together.

"Well it's about the independence of our nation and it's just a great, wonderful day for people to spend their time together and have fun," Parade Attendee Ben Bowman said.

But parade attendee Betty Gray says the holiday is much bigger than the celebrations we have today.

"Well I think we live in the greatest country in the world and I'm so proud to be an American and I think it's the day where we just stop and remember how we should be grateful everyday really for where we live and what we have and how the Lord has blessed this country and will continue to do so," Gray said.

Tim Drain says local neighborhood parades like on Heines Street bring friends and family together.

"It's to celebrate friends and family and country and faith and everything that's important that we trust in and believe in," Drain said.

Gray says she's happy to see younger families passing on Independence Day traditions.

"There are a lot of families, young families, and it's really good to see families being trained and teaching their children what fourth of July is really about," Gray said.

But her husband Gil Gray has a different idea about what the holiday is about.

"The kids seem to enjoy it, the food's always good," Gray said.

Bowman thinks the holiday brings out the best in everyone.

"It's a nice way for everyone to have fun because there's a bike race, there's a parade going on and all the kids just have fun. There's always a way to have fun in this parade," Bowman said.

Fourth of July celebrations continue across East Texas tonight and tomorrow.
