East Texas girls to shave their heads to fight like Emma

East Texas girls shaving their heads in support of a friend

FLINT (KYTX)-Today these girls are playing out on the playground but when they come back from Boston on Monday, they'll be bald. They are shaving their heads in support of their friend and cousin, Emma.

Emma Routh is a nine year old girl with a special attitude toward life.

"Fight and never give up and just fight and fight and fight and fight," Routh said.

Emma is fighting for her life. She has a terminal bone marrow disease called farconi anemia which leads to cancer.

Because of that doctors have treated her for leukemia, causing her to lose her hair. But being bald has given her a special gift and she's adopted a new philosophy.

"People need good luck and bald people can give them good luck," Routh said.

She'll soon have four friends able to give out luck with her.

Emma's friends decided to shave their heads so Emma didn't have to go through this alone.

So they're all taking a journey to Boston where Emma received treatment for her disease.

That's where they'll honor their friend and look just like her.

"People usually bully her, and if they want to bully her, that's not nice. So they can just bully me instead," Emma's friend Elizabeth Coats said.

The mom of two of the girls, Amy Ficco, says she was initially tried to convince her daughters not to do it because she fears they will be bullied.

"Even though I did try to talk them out of it, I'm glad they stuck with their guns, you know, they didn't back down. They have great character, they are very strong," Ficco said.

Along with shaving their heads, the girls also raised money for cancer research through a website.

Ficco's daughter Bailey says she isn't nervous at all.

"It makes me feel happy that Emma won't feel alone," Ficco said.

In her happy go lucky fashion, Emma says the girls will notice some advantages of being hair-free.

"We can go underwater if our hair is not messed up and we can just have fun," Routh said!

But most of all, she's touched by the support..

These girls all go to school together and they say the thing they are most excited about is getting back to school looking the same as Emma does.
