East Texas High School Graduation Rates are Higher

TYLER (KYTX)-Graduation rates are shooting up for schools across Texas.

The U.S. Department of Education has released numbers, placing Texas in the top five states with an 88 percent graduation rate.

After lots of new programs trying to emphasize graduation and college, a lot of East Texas districts are doing even better than the state average when it comes to graduation rates.

Robert E. Lee junior, Abbey Adkins, has grown up in TISD schools.

She's been the target for new programs in the past few years, built to emphasize graduation and college.

Programs that are clearly working.

Graduation rates for Tyler ISD hit 92 percent in 2012, a five percent increase from the year before and not to mention, four percentage points higher than the current state average.

"Everyone I know is graduating and a lot of my friends are going off to college," said Adkins. "I feel like Lee has done a really good job of preparing us for that."

Robert E. Lee PTA mom, Brenda Stratton says the district has been working for years to improve these numbers.

"Accelerated tutorials, emphasized one on one, i think they've analyzed best practices from many districts and sat down and charted out how they're going to address graduation rates and obviously through a multi prong approach they've taken it head on," said Stratton.

"I think there's a lot more emphasis on one-on-one, like at private schools," said Adkins. "Avid is a big thing here, which is just like having a personal advocate here at school, because a lot of kids don't have that at home."

Tyler ISD isn't the only local district seeing improvements.

In 2012, Longview had a 93 percent graduation rate, up from 88 in 2011.

Bullard saw an 11 point increase from 88 percent in 2011 to 99 percent in 2012.

Whitehouse jumped up one point from 94 to 95 percent in 2012.

Adkins is already thinking about what schools she'll apply to next year. Hoping her graduating class will set another impressive record.

A bunch of East Texas school districts, including here at Tyler ISD, plan to continue programs here inside the schools to boost those graduation rates even more.

These 2012 are the most recent statistics compiled.

The numbers for 2013 graduation rates will come out in late June this year.
