East Texas joins statewide effort to employ veterans

TYLER (KYTX) - 28 cities across Texas hold veteran's job fairs on the same day. Thursday's event in Tyler is part of a state-wide campaign called "Red, White, and You." It offered jobs ranging from grocery store positions to oil field work.

For Army Veteran Lawrence Walker, job searching, is a job in itself! Like many of the other 1.7 million Texas veterans, he's struggling to find decent work.

"It hurts because we're out there fighting for the United States," he says.

For the first time, he feels like  someone is helping him fight the battle he's found here at home.

"It's a great feeling to see that somebody's stepping up to the plate to say 'hey look we need to take care of these guys,'" Lawrence says.

He says the tough transition from soldier to veteran makes it hard for many to keep good jobs.

"You have to re-adjust to society," he says.

Right now the national unemployment rate is sitting at 6.3 percent, but for post 9/11 veterans, it's all the way up at 10 percent.

"It shocks me badly. It's sad when I hear that," says disabled U.S. Army Veteran Jason Griffin. He's one of those post 9/11 veterans.

He says job searching has been tough since he finished his 6-year service in 2010.

"Going in and out of the VA hospital, going into appointments trying to find people to accommodate for that," he says.

His plan is to stay positive.

"I'm just putting my name out there and hoping for the best!"

He's crossing his fingers and feeling thankful for much-needed support.
