Press Release from Halloween Harvey Festival of Fear
TYLER (KYTX) – Years ago, almost every TV market had a local horror movie host whose Saturday night program would shock and scare legions of adoring fans.
With the advent of cable TV, the much-loved local hosts were left fighting for viewers. Most left the airwaves for good, but the love for their brand of programming remained long after their spooky images left the small screen.
A simple search of "horror hosts" online will find numerous fan clubs and forums celebrating ghouls of the past and present. One might also stumble across Halloween Harvey.
Halloween Harvey is a TV Horror Host on several TV stations in Northeast Texas. The character began as a radio call-in bit on KKUS radio's "Bob In The Morning" show in 2005. In 2010, after researching horror hosts on TV, Mauldin created "Festival of Fear", a two hour program featuring black and white B-movies hosted by Halloween Harvey. Shortly after the 2010 season of the show, Mauldin formed 31 West Productions and began producing the travel/history show, Expedition Texas. Halloween Harvey's Festival of Fear was put on the back burner until 2013, when a new season of the show was produced with an expanded cast, improved sets, and better special effects.
Mauldin says that Festival of Fear is a little different from other horror hosts' shows because of the emphasis on character development for each of the goofy characters on the show. Harvey, played by Mauldin, is a mortician working for Fast Freddie's Funeral Home and Fried Pies. He dreams of being a comedian, despite being painfully unfunny. His mentor, Fast Freddie, played by Kit Scott, died years ago but continues to give advice by haunting a portrait on the wall of the parlor. Zelda, played by Glinda Bauer, is Freddie's widow. She spends most of her time in the basement kitchen of the funeral home preparing fun Halloween-themed treats for Harvey to eat. Actress Sonia Martinez steals the show as Wanda the Crystal Ball Lady. Wanda uses her "psychic powers" to answer viewer questions, often incorrectly, on the show.
The 2013 season of Halloween Harvey's Festival of Fear started September 28th at 7pm on KCEB MeTV in Tyler. The show can also be seen Sundays at 7pm on COZI (Suddenlink channel 14) in Tyler, KAQC 22 in Atlanta, TX, and on Local TV 99 in Paris, TX. The show is presented by Spirit Halloween Superstores in Tyler and Longview.
Halloween Harvey is scheduled for several appearances throughout the viewing area during October, including a panel discussion with the entire cast of the show at Tyler's Rose City Comic Con October 26th and 27th. The cast will answer questions about the horror hosts of the past and present.
