East Texas restaurants cash in on Johnny Football's win

TYLER (KYTX) - There were plenty of happy A&M fans here in East Texas after freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel takes home the most coveted award in college sports - the Heisman trophy.

This weekend, some Tyler restaurants are boosting business as they celebrate the news with fans.

Johnny Football's big Heisman win filled Jenna Rohde with pride for her alma mater.

"It's an honor. It's an honor being an Aggie alum," she said. "We were ecstatic when we found out the news. It was like a big party and everyone celebrated after.

"We actually had a pretty big crowd watching the Heisman last night. They were pretty excited about that," said Ace Estrella. He's a manager at Cork, a restaurant in Tyler, that's cashing in on Manziel's big win.

"If you wear an A&M jersey, we'll take care of a cocktail and a sandwich," Estrella said Sunday.

Cork is one restaurants offering specials because of Manziel. Wasabi and Buffalo Wild Wings cashed in too over the weekend.

Estrella says specials like this are great for business, especially because Cork is pretty new.

"It keeps our clientele very active and it's something new for them to come check out a new spot in town," he said.

Rohde says, "It's a win win for the customer and the business."

It's all to celebrate a talented young athlete, who once called East Texas home.

"I think it's great to have a local athlete do something as big as he is doing," Estrella said.

Rohde says he deserved to win.

"Coming from a small town and he's doing big things and he's still staying humble," she said.

All while making history as the first freshman player to ever win the Heisman trophy.
