Election Day in Texas

TYLER (KYTX) - All polling locations will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

As you've probably heard, the Texas Voter ID L aw is in effect this election. Workers at the Smith County Elections Office say, at least for early voting, that hasn't been an issue.

"Every voter came in and they were fine showing their ID. We didn't have any problems with that."

Smith County Elections Administrator Karen Nelson says Texans must present one of the following forms of photo ID when voting in person:

  • Driver license
  • Election identification certificate
  • Personal identification card
  • Concealed handgun license
  • Military identification card
  • Citizenship certificate
  • Passport.

Nelson says she's actually not worried about people forgetting their IDs this election. Her concern is that people will go to the wrong voting location.

"One thing people need to realize is their polling location may not be the same one that they had in November for the presidential election. We consolidate to fewer locations on an amendment election because typically it's a lower voter turnout." she says.

Amendment elections also require more reading and research.

"Nobody likes to stand in a line." says Kevin McCall.

He has been a poll worker for the past 15 years.

He says you can make the voting process much smoother by studying the amendments on the ballot before you head to the polls.

"You can write it down. Bring in a cheat sheet. I will be doing that myself because it speeds things up to do advanced research before you come in."

He says have your research and photo ID ready, and you'll save yourself a headache this election day.
