ELKHART (KYTX) - There's an eerie silence outside of Elkhart High School. Students and teachers there are trying to understand why one of their own was taken so soon.
"The kids all care about each other and it's like they lost one of their family members," said Kevin Clark.
Elkhart High School Principal Kevin Clark says Cheyenne was a varsity cheerleader and softball player.
"Seemed to be friends with everybody," said Clark.
Early Saturday around 3 a.m., Cheyenne and three other people were riding in a truck with Hayden Gray, another student.
A lot of students went to a basketball game in nearby Slocum Friday night.
"It's our understanding there was a get together or party with several of the kids and a lot of the kids had left there and gone their separate ways," said Dr. Ray DeSpain, Elkhart ISD Superintendent.
According to the DPS report, Gray was driving his truck along County Road 2101, when for some reason, he veered off the road, crashing into the trees, flipping his truck over.
"We always talk to kids about decisions they make and things of that nature," said Dr. DeSpain.
Gray was arrested for being intoxicated at the time of the crash. However, law enforcement has not told CBS 19 where he received alcohol or if he was drinking it when he flipped his truck.
"Within the last 6 years, we've had 5," said Clark.
Cheyenne is the fifth student to die in some type of accident at Elkhart High School.
"It's been tough, and it will continue to be tough...today, tomorrow and throughout the course of this week," said Dr. DeSpain
A number that is taking it's toll on everyone who walks into this school.
"It's horrible, it's like you lose a family member. I consider all these kids, just like they were my own," said Clark.
