(TYLER MORNING TELEGRAPH) - A 31-year-old Tyler attorney, on Thursday morning, announced his candidacy for Smith County Court-at-Law judge.
Jason Ellis, who is in private practice, said he would run the court like a small business. "We cannot afford to let the trial docket sit stagnant. Parties will not resolve their disputes, and that costs us valuable county resources," he said.
Ellis promised to get the court's trial docket moving again by eliminating unnecessary hearings and denying attorneys' endless continuances. He also pledges to be available to law enforcement officers who need emergency orders and warrants signed day and night.
Judge Thomas Dunn will retire from the County Court at Law judge position on December 31, 2014 after holding that office since 1996.
