ET-based civilian air group to perform in place of active military at Dallas Veterans Day parade

GILMER (KYTX) - Civilian pilots based in East Texas are making sure that the annual Dallas Veterans Day Parade show goes on.

Pilots from Flight of the Phoenix Aviation Museum in Gilmer will perform the missing man air formation drill near the end of the parade.

Active military pilots normally perform the drill -- but that won't happen this year because of the government sequestration.

East Texas pilots say they're happy to step up.

"They're not all professional aviators," said retired Air Force Capt. Steve Dean, who is team leader of Flight of the Phoenix. "Some, like me, have just had a passion for aviation all of their life and have done it off and on at some point during our career."

The group says it's booked nearly every weekend, including a drill November 2nd in Bonham -- and two shows on Veterans Day.
